The Daily 5
What is “The Daily 5” ?
The Daily 5 is a series of independent literacy tasks that the children do while I am working with guided reading groups. It is the “heart” of our literacy time, and takes up the majority of our morning.
Each day, we do three 10-15 minute “rounds” of the Daily 5. Before each round we do a 5-10 minute activity focused on writing, reading comprehension, vocabulary, or high-frequency words.
The children choose where they would like to go for each round, and which task(s) they would like to complete each day. Within each area of the Daily 5 there are many choices:
1. Read to Self: Each child has his/her own book bin. The bin contains books that we have read during guided reading groups (at their own reading level), as well as 5 books of his/her choice from our classroom library. Click here to see what Read to Self looks like in our classroom.
2. Work on Writing: There are many different choices during work on writing! The children can write: lists, books, cards, jokes-anything! Click here to see what Work on Writing looks like in our classroom.
3. Listen to Reading: Listening to reading expands vocabulary and improves fluency. The children can listen to books at the listening center (books on CD), or at the computers. We use a great website called Bookflix, where the children can watch animated versions of their favorite books, while following along with the words. Click here to see what Listen to Reading looks like in our classroom.
4. Word Work: There are 3-4 choices for word work each week. These activities allow the children to experiment with words, practice spelling patterns, and learn high-frequency words. Click here to see what Word Work looks like in our classroom.
5. Read to Someone: Read to someone is incorporated into our guided reading groups.
Asking your child what he/she worked on during the Daily 5 would be a great conversation piece when you want to know what happened at school today!
